I thought I would put some background about myself on this page rather that just as a blog.
My name is Richard MIlburn, I’m 19 and about to start my second year at York university studying Politics Philosophy and Economics. I’m travelling to Kenya on the 30th July and returning on the 1st October. I’ve been there three times before, and from my first trip have gained a deep and abiding love of the place and go back whenever I have the time and money to do so. I have a great friend I know out there, Isaac Ouma, a safari guide and conservationist, and we travel around together and he set up some voluntary work for me on two of my previous trips teaching and giving talks to schools about conservation. He is a wonderful bloke and a real inspiration, as well as being a brilliant safari guide, so if you’re in East Africa and need a guide look him up.
I’ve travelled quite widely in my life with my family, but Africa is the place which has gripped me the most and so where I always go back to when I have the chance, although hopefully if I save enough money I will explore some other places in the world; my aim is to have been to every continent in the world by the time I’m thirty – I still have Australasia and South America to go! Other than travel my interests are cricket, football, rugby, going to the theatre, reading, sailing and writing – I’ve had my first novel, ‘Savannah Memories’ published recently (I’ve written a short post about this in the main section. I’m also in my university officer training corp, so every other weekend go onto catterick training area and learn the basics of being an officer in the british army, which is both interesting and also a good laugh, although it does get ridiculously cold – we were once out in -7 degrees centigrade!
I’ve never written a blog before, but got an email from STA travel about the travelbuzz they were doing, and thought it sounded like a good idea, so emailed them back and with their help got started. I’ll try to show a few different sights and sounds of Kenya and Africa that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing as well as a few health tips and such like along the way.
I hope you enjoy!
